ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the performance of two single cylinder, four-stroke, compression ignition engines using different blends of Jatropha curcas biodiesel and commercial diesel as fuel. Four different biodiesel blends – B5, B10, B15, B20, and unblended diesel were used as treatments. Data from AMTEC Test Report were used for the performance evaluation using unblended diesel. A 9.5 hp KUVICO and 9.5 hp VIKYNO diesel engine were subjected to the continuous running tests of the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards for Testing of Small Engines (PAES 117:2000) to obtain actual data for the output power, fuel consumption, cooling water temperature and engine oil temperature. The specific gravity and heating value of the different biodiesel blends were obtained and used to calculate the thermal efficiency. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the performance of KUVICO engine using the different fuel blends while significant differences on the fuel consumption and thermal efficiency were observed for the VIKYNO engine.
